Excel “Gotchas” that People Often Forget to Teach – Part 2, Everything’s on One Line

Everything’s on one line! – Text Wrapping:

Excel is generally not used for words and paragraphs.  But that’s not to say that we don’t sometimes need words in Excel, not Word!

Generally your Excel cells will be setup without text wrapping.  This means text that is wider than a cell overflows into adjacent cells (the overflow will depend on your left/center/right justification):

This is all fine and dandy, until you put content into the adjacent cells:

To solve, you have two options.

Widen the column (see our previous blog post about numbers and column widths).

Or, wrap the cell text:

  1. Select the cell(s) to text wrap.
  2. Change the width of your column if desired.
  3. Choose HOME,  .
