Extending Internet Explorer’s Capabilities Using Accelerators

Internet Explorer 10 is a popular tool for web browsing, and has a fair number of features on its own. But you may not know you can extend its capabilities using what are known as “Accelerators”.

Accelerators send information to a trusted online service that will help you accomplish a task. For instance, the Bing Translator Accelerator (which we’ll explain below) sends text to Microsoft’s online translation service, which translates the text and sends it back to your browser.

For Windows 8 users, we should note that Accelerators only work in the Desktop version of IE10, not the Windows Store App version.

In addition to the already present Accelerators, you can also install and access other Accelerators that suit your needs. You can find Accelerators to install on the Internet Explorer Add-ons site.

Using Accelerators

Some Accelerators show a window. Others open another tab, where you can finish your desired action on another website. For instance, the Blogger accelerator lets you take a quote text from a website and post it on your Blogger blog, along with a link it to the source website. This can help you easily express your opinion on something you’ve seen written.

To use most Accelerators:

1. [Click] and [Drag] to select some text.

2. [Click] . Or, [Right Click] your selection.

3. Choose a visible Accelerator, or choose ALL ACCELERATORS then one of the listed Accelerators.

Note: If a favorite Accelerator is in ALL ACCELERATORS, and you don’t want to have to go to that menu, you can add it to the defaults for easier access. Choose , MANAGE ADDONS. Under ADD-ON TYPES, [Click] ACCELERATORS. Choose an Accelerator, [Click] SET AS DEFAULT, then CLOSE.

In the next section, we’ll cover how to use the Bing Translate Accelerator as an example of how to use an Accelerator.
