SETTING UP OR SIGNING IN WITH AN APPLE ID
An Apple ID is a universal login for all things Apple. If you’ve ever purchased something from iTunes, then you already have one. On your iOS device, your Apple ID will be used to download apps, purchase music, set up iCloud (which we’ll talk more about later), and more.
You don’t need to have an Apple ID to use your device, but it greatly expands what you can do with it.
If you already have an Apple ID, like an account you’ve used in iTunes before, choose SIGN IN WITH AN APPLE ID.
Otherwise, choose CREATE A FREE APPLE ID, unless you don’t wish to have one, in which case choose SKIP THIS STEP.
THE LEGAL PART
The next screen will ask you to agree to Apple’s Terms and Conditions. Just tap AGREE, then confirm your choice.
ICLOUD
Now you’ll be asked whether or not you want to use iCloud. iCloud is a new service from Apple that allows free online syncing of contacts, calendar, bookmarks, reminders, notes, photos, and certain application files.
It also gives you the option to backup your device’s settings and information online, and to track your device’s location, as long as it’s connected to Internet (Wi-Fi or 3G). This last feature is called Find My (iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch).
DIAGNOSTICS
Next you’ll choose whether you want your device to send its diagnostics and usage information to Apple. This information is sent anonymously, and used to improve future versions of the software.
READY TO GO
That’s it! You’re new iPad or iPhone is initially set up and ready to use. Be sure to check out our iOS 5 Quick Reference Card to learn more about getting the most out of your new device.
